[:nl]We hebben allemaal onze eigen ‘automatische piloot’. Wanneer we een auto rijden, fietsen, onze moedertaal gebruiken en in zoveel andere situaties gebruiken we hem. Over the algemeen is dat heel goed. Stel je eens voor hoe moeilijk de wereld zou zijn als je je overal 100% op zou moeten concentreren omdat je lichaam/hersenen zich niets zouden herinneren. Dat zou het leven bijna onmogelijk maken!
Deze ‘autopiloot’ begint ook wanneer je een tweede (derde/vierde) taal leert. Op eigenlijk alle niveau’s heb je een vorm hiervan. Denk eens terug aan de tijd dat je begon met het leven van een nieuwe taal. Op een gegeven moment kende je 10 of 15 woorden en zinnen die je kon gebruiken zonder er echt over na te denken. Je kende de betekenis en de uitspraak en je voelde je zelfverzekerd bij het gebruik ervan. Dit is het moment dat jouw automatische piloot begon.
Maar…de automatische piloot is ook gevaarlijk. Fouten/problemen/bugs kunnen erin geprogrammeerd zijn. Mijn student van vandaag leert Engels en heeft een probleem om de ‘s’ te gebruiken in zinnen zoals: She walks to the supermarket. Soms gebruikt hij het maar eigenlijk gebruikt hij het vaker niet dan wel. Dit betekent dat de ‘s’ van he/she/it niet geprogrammeerd is in zijn automatische piloot. En het merendeel van de tijd wanneer hij Engels praat kan hij de automatische piloot gebruiken, hij kan duidelijk praten, zijn ideeën overbrengen ,zichzelf verstaanbaar maken en anderen begrijpen. Geprogrammeerde problemen zijn moeilijk te veranderen! Het is veel moeilijker om een ‘bug’ in je automatische piloot op te lossen dan om nieuwe informatie er in te programmeren. Wanneer je het probleem probeert op te lossen is verreweg het belangrijkste dat je iemand hebt die je corrigeert. Het is zo belangrijk! Anders worden de fouten onderdeel van je automatische piloot en is het moeilijk ze te veranderen. Helaas…misschien moet je honderden keren op de bug worden gewezen en dit is niet leuk. Maar na een tijd van extra concentratie en focus op het problem zul je merken dat er een tijd komt waarin ineens (op de een of andere manier) de goede code geupload is in de automatische piloot en nu kun je de ‘s’ voor he/she/it in de tegenwoordige tijd gebruiken zonder er bij stil te staan!

That would make life almost impossible!
This autopilot also kicks in once you have started to learn a second (third/fourth) language. Actually on all levels there is some form of it. Try to think back to when you started learning a new language. At a certain moment there were 10 or 15 words or sentences you could use almost without thinking about it. You knew the meaning and the pronunciation and you felt confident using these words. There you had the start of your autopilot.
However..the autopilot can be tricky. Because mistakes/issues/bugs can be programmed within it. The student I had today is learning English and has got a real problem using the ‘s’ in sentences such as: She walks to the supermarket. Sometimes he uses it but more often than not he doesn’t. This means the ‘s’ of he/she/it has not been programmed in his autopilot. And most of the time when he talks English he can use the autopilot, he can speak clearly, get his ideas across, make himself understood and understand others. Programmed issues/bugs are difficult to change! It is much more difficult to solve a bug in your autopilot than it is to put new information in it. The most important thing to do when trying to get rid of the bug is that someone needs to correct you. It is so important! Otherwise these mistakes will become part of the programming and will never change. Granted…maybe you will need to be correct/made aware of the bug hundreds of times and this isn’t fun. But after a while of concentrating harder and focusing on this problem you will notice a time comes when suddenly (somehow) the correct code has been uploaded to the autopilot and now you can use the ‘s’ for he/she and it in the present tense without even giving it a second thought!
